Giving Tuesday

mardi je donne largeur

On December 2 the fundraising world with be swirling with Giving Tuesday (GT) initiatives.

GT was established as a day to “give back”, on the first Tuesday after US Thanksgiving, to counteract the “Black Friday” retail shopping frenzy and “Cyber Monday” online promotions. So, on Tuesday after days of feasting and shopping, we reflect on where our riches can be directed to “do good”.

For the SSVP, GT is an opportunity to reach out to donors. If your conference or council is considering joining in, below are a few strategies:

  •  Early “prompting”: Send out teaser reminders that GT is coming mid-month, and the week leading up to December 2.
  • Multiple reminders: You may send out 2 or 3 emails on the GT Day, starting with the appeal, and then mid and/or late in the day.
  • Follow up:  Some will send out a reminder a few days after GT to donors who didn’t participate.

A good tactic is to get a major donor or sponsor to participate in a matching program. Every dollar donated will be matched one-to-one by the sponsor, sometimes up to a certain level. During a day filled with heightened awareness of fundraising, it can provide an added incentive for donors to contribute.

The content of the email would be dependent on what programs in your council or conference you would like to focus on. Impactful statements are always effective. Let donors know what their donation does: replenish a food bank, help a soup kitchen, fund a shelter, fund a school breakfast program, etc.

The email should be easy to read without a great deal of text. If you have a program that requires more background, supply a link to your website.

Along with sending out emails, remember that you can repeat the text and/or visuals on any social media platforms you are using.

Suggested Bulletin announcement (Sunday, November 30):

Giving Tuesday – Share the Gift of Hope

This year, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul in our parish will join Christians around the world in Giving Tuesday, the Global Day of Generosity. We invite you to prayerfully consider making a special gift on Giving Tuesday to support our outreach to our neighbours in need.

Your donation – no matter the size – helps us feed the hungry, care for the vulnerable, and share the love of Christ in our community. Thank you for your generosity!
