In January, the National Strategic Plan Committee launched a nationwide survey for members, volunteers, and employees of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. This survey marked the first step in a broader consultation process aimed at reaching as many voices as possible. Its purpose is to spark meaningful conversations across with the Society and to support three main objectives: deepening our understanding of diverse perspectives, building greater awareness of shared challenges and opportunities, and encouraging broader engagement in the work of SSVP.
We received 465 completed surveys from respondents nationwide. Many participants shared additional comments, offering valuable insights into various aspects of the SSVP. From participant feedback, three major issues have been identified.
- Recruitment and Retention of Young Adults
Attracting and keeping young adults (ages 19 – 35) involved in conference is a significant concern nationwide. Listening Sessions with those already engaged, either as members or volunteers, will help us to understand what draws them to SSVP and what barriers exist.
- Leadership and Executive Roles
Filling executive positions at the conference and council levels is a widespread challenge. Listening Sessions aim to understand the challenges faced by current members that are already engaged in these positions or those who are considering them. As a volunteer-driven organization, we need to make leadership roles more appealing to ensure long-term sustainability.
- Relationship with the Church and Parishes
Survey feedback revealed varied relationships between conferences and local churches. While some report strong support from clergy, others face limited access or strained connections. Some participants also noted they no longer have access to a local church for support, making recruitment and fundraising difficult. Given our strong connection to the Catholic Church, it’s important to understand and respond to these evolving dynamics.
To address and explore these further, the committee is inviting you to join upcoming “Listening Sessions” to take place across Canada in April and May.
Listening Sessions will take place both on Zoom and in person, depending on capacity and feasibility in each region. Each session will last between 1 and 1.5 hours and will include up to12 participants.
If you’re interested in participating, please send an email, including name and location, to the following address: stratplan@ssvp.ca.
Once we receive your expression of interest, you’ll be asked to complete a short (1-minute) demographic questionnaire to help us ensure a diverse mix of participants.
We’ll notify you of sessions in your region.
We look forward to your sharing further your perspectives and ideas to help strengthen the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul.
