“Cure the Summertime Blues” Campaign Launches to

Fight Summer Hunger on Southern Vancouver Island

Victoria, BC — The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul Vancouver Island is launching its Cure the Summertime Blues campaign to help address growing food insecurity during the summer months, beginning with two community food drives titled Cram the Van to the Max, in partnership with Maximum Express Courier.

The campaign comes at a time when many families face increased challenges accessing food support. With school meal programs paused for the summer and donations traditionally declining during vacation season, demand on local food programs continues to rise.

The first Cram the Van to the Max food drive took place on May 30 outside the Sticky Wicket on Douglas Street, followed by a second event on June 6 outside Sacred Heart Church. The Cure for the Summertime Blues campaign is running all summer. The two Cram the Van to the Max food drives helped us raise $7,000 and over 380 KG of food donations

Community members are encouraged to donate canned food, boxed meals, pantry staples, and financial contributions in support of the Society’s Choices Food Pantry.

“We are seeing more and more families, seniors, and individuals struggling to put food on the table,” said Derek Pace. “Summer can be one of the hardest times of year for people experiencing food insecurity. When school food programs pause and donations slow down, the pressure on our Choices pantry increases significantly. This campaign is about coming together as a community to ensure no one goes hungry.”

The charity is aiming to raise $25,000 through the Cure the Summertime Blues campaign to help restock shelves and provide nutritious food throughout the summer months. Financial donations are especially encouraged, as they allow the organization to maximize buying power through bulk purchasing.

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul Vancouver Island provides essential community services including food security programs, affordable housing, thrift stores, childcare, and support services for vulnerable individuals and families across the region.
